I've mentioned in an earlier post about my love/hate relationship with spin classes. Definitely more love than hate. This morning I hit up my gym, which just so happens to be a Lance Armstrong club. So, you can imagine the spin classes rock. For starters the bike room has tons of huge murals of Mr. Armstrong himself. This in of itself is enough to get me out of bed at the ungodly 4:30 a.m.
I have taken many of spin classes over the years. I am by no means an expert spinner but I do know what constitutes a good vs. bad class. I have taken many bad classes. Bad music, bad vibe, bad teacher, bad music-yes, I mentioned it again. Music is of the utmost importance to me. It can make or break a party, it can make a bad day seem less bad, it can make my feet dance, it can start conversations,it can make a drive through Western Kansas go by a little bit faster (I said a little...).
Bottom line: Good music makes everything better.
I was lucky to get a spot in the class-it was pretty much filled up by the time I got there at 5:10. After my previous encounters with classes being filed, I was relieved that today wouldn't be one of those days. I was also thrilled to be in this class with this teacher. The class this morning was one of the better classes I have taken. The teacher rocked, she communicated to the class what we were going to do (hills, more hills and a few more hills) and she had awesome music. Music that I got swept away by, music that I was so into that I totally forgot where I was, what I was doing and the hills I was pushing to get up. I totally got into the zone, was memorized by Lance in front of me and rode. Rode my ass off. The music helped get me to this point, to push my body (my legs were burning) to the limit. Great teacher, kudos to her music selection! Great music makes all the difference.
There is a huge Lance Armstrong quote on the wall at the gym. I see it everyday I walk into the gym. I read it every time. I think it is just great. Lance is great. Awesome music for an early morning spin class is even better.
"This is my body and I can do whatever I want to it, I can push it, study it, tweak it, listen to it.
Everybody wants to know what I'm on.
What am I on?
I'm on my bike busting my ass six hours a day.
What are you on?"
